Listen to "Spite" here
To celebrate the release of "Spite" and his future hinted sophomore album, I decided to show songs by Omar Apollo that I love that others should 100% check out!
1. Hit Me Up by Omar Apollo, Dominic Fike, Kenny Beats
the addicting bass and drums compliment Omar's sweet vocals and Fike's rapping as this track ensues. to me, they could be talking about a love interest that you're willing to give your time and effort to this person if they just give you the "okay", hence the line "And I'll waste my time if you pursue me, I'll let you know if you ever hit me up". It's almost like they're giving more effort into the relationship than the love interest is, and they want to see a mutual interest.
2. Frio by Omar Apollo
Easily one of my Favorite songs by Apollo. Frio has such a sensual rnb beat that contradicts itself with the lyrics. To be honest with you guys, I only translated these lyrics for myself recently. I had a feeling from the few words I understood that the song is not a sensual song, and that is in fact a song talking about how the singer can't love their past lover, as they were not a good partner to them. the line "No puedo Con este dolor, dolor. Y ya acabe contigo, contigo. Tu negaste tanto amor, amor. Me dejaste frío, frío" or in english "I can’t take this pain, pain. And I’m already done with you, you. You denied so much love, love. You left me cold, cold.
3. Amor Malo by Omar Apollo
This has to be one of the rawest songs Omar has released so far. Amor Malo translates into bad love, and that is exactly what this song is about. the repetitive chorus "got into some bad love, now my heart's a mess" continues to follow throughout the song which shows us that this past relationship might have been not healthy to Apollo and the past lover in song. Throughout the song, Omar will admit to his shortcomings in the relationship, and even things that the past lover did, but to keep on hearing this chorus means that no matter who is at fault, coming out from a relationship can be such a heavy process for our hearts and as someone who listened to this song during her breakup, I can vouch for the meaning Omar was portraying.
4. En El Olvido by Omar Apollo
One thing about me and this song is as soon as I learned the lyrics, I never shut up about this song for months. The Corrido song En El Olvido, or In Oblivion is simply about a failed relationship. (I see a trend with my picks...) the song begins with Omar expressing his hopelessness after the breakup. He hates to see his ex-love move on as he still feels the pain, they left him with. He only wishes to be able to hold them one more time, and show them the love they had with him one more time, but he simply can't. The chorus goes on with "Arrancaste todo que quedaba. Por razones que no aceptaba. Cariño, yo fui buen amante. En el olvido quiero dejarte" translated to english as "You ripped out all that was left. For reasons I didn't accept. Honey, I was a good lover. In oblivion I want to leave you. This song captures such a real feeling after a hard breakup and it makes for a great song to belt late at night. sigh....
